My Wife on the Mission Field

Over the past several days my wife, Holly, has had the opportunity to minister to three lost people. The comprehensiveness of her ministry opportunities have been quite astounding. She has provided them meals when hungry. She has given them transportation (none of them can drive). She has tended to them during sickness. She has prayed for them and with them and has talked to them about Jesus.

And the really amazing thing is that she has not been doing this for only the past several days, but for months. Who are these lost people? Our children.

Just a reminder that the first mission field is the home. I'm thankful to be married to a woman who carries this as a deep conviction.

This reminds me of a story that Spurgeon told in his Autobiography. He wrote, "Well do I remember hearing my father speak of an incident that greatly impressed him. He used to be frequently away from home preaching, and at one time, as he was on his way to a service, he feared that he was neglecting his own family while caring for the souls of others. He therefore turned back, and went to his home. On arriving there, he was surprised to find no one in the lower rooms of the house but, on ascending the stairs, he heard a sound as of someone engaged in prayer. On listening at the bedroom door, he discovered that it was my mother, pleading most earnestly for the salvation of all her children and specially praying for Charles, her firstborn and strong-willed son. My father felt that he might safely go about his Master's business while his dear wife was caring so well for the spiritual interests of the boys and girls at home, so he did not disturb her, but proceeded at once to fulfill his preaching engagement." [C. H. Spurgeon, The Early Years (Edinburgh: The Banner of Truth Trust, 1962) 45]

Thanks, Holly for loving our children and making their conversion, spiritual formation, education, nurture, and general well-being the top priority of your life. I love you.

Seriously, Holly you've been such an inspiration to me over the years. I really look up to you and consider you one of my role models. I'm really proud to be your little sister.

Brian,

That's a great post. I'm also thankful for a wife who loves her children.
